| Sarigerme - Turkey |
Close your eyes and dream...
You’re lying on a comfy sunlounger, the warm sun’s blazing down and caressing your stressed-out mind and body. You feel that magazine slipping from your fingers as you drift off, lulled by the soft swish of waves.
And when you finally awake, you cool off in the mirror-clear waters before sashaying to the nearest beach bar to sip on fresh pomegranate juice or a long, refreshing cocktail.
No it’s not a dream. You’re in Sarigerme on Turkey’s exquisite Lycian coast. And you’re lying on what might be one of the most stunning beaches you’ve ever seen.
Wide, long and uncongested. Washed by shimmering seas favoured by the sailing fraternity for their cooling breezes. Backed by shady olive groves and overlooked by a beautiful rocky islet basking just offshore.
Beyond the sands, Sarigerme is one of those no-nonsense, friendly towns that won’t come between you and utter relaxation. Small and quiet, its souvenir, clothes and beach shops blend quietly in with friendly bars and restaurants serving authentic Turkish cuisine.
When you’re ready to explore, there’s much to see. Hire a car and go nowhere in particular, following winding mountain roads that reveal stupefying vistas at every turn or catch a dolmus to Dalyan and take a boat ride along its reedy delta to wallow in its local sulphur mud baths.
Marvel at the aeons-old ruins at Caunos or relax on the sands at famous Turtle Beach, taking care not to disturb the beautiful loggerhead turtles that nest here.
Against green woodland, the lovely little resort of Sarigerme is a fantastic place for a holiday, with its shore protected for the turtles who make their home there.
Sarigerme is tucked away not that far from Dalaman Airport. Heading off the main road, you wind down along a small valley to the sea and a long, wide, white-sand beach, backed by shady pine trees.
Quite how the mass-market has overlooked Sarigerme for so long is a mystery, but for now we can rejoice in it remaining a peaceful haven.
Sarigerme is actually not the name of the village, but the name of the beach - the village’s name is Osmaniye, but the name Sarigerme has stuck. Osmaniye village is small, however, during the summer season it becomes quite lively.
Although its population has grown due to the facilities developed here over the years, Sarigerme has still preserved its natural beauty, with its pine trees and sandy beaches.
The village itself is about 1 km from the lovely beach, but even this has been made easy as the locals run a free shuttle from the village to the beach.
The shuttle is like a small passenger train you may have seen in some of the larger resorts, but here the ‘train’ is pulled by the local tractor!
You'll find a handful of shops, bars and restaurants in the village, as well as bus (dolmus) services to larger towns.
